An Generosity of Unknown Individuals: How a Man I Only Just Encountered Helped Me Obtain the Job That Changed My Life

In the final years of the 1980s, I was embarking on a backpacking trip to Europe with a travel partner. Since my friend was interested in pursuing a master’s degree in NYC, we had arranged a fortnight visit there before heading to London.

We reached the graduate housing, a big multi-story edifice on the Manhattan's Upper West Side called International House. After dropping our bags, we made our way to the canteen, where we got some food, took a seat, and started talking to fellow residents.

Sitting next to me was an Iraqi man enrolled in an engineering program at an Ivy League institution. He wanted to know what I did for a living, and I explained that I had newly finished with a scientific background and had been performing experiments involving microscopic analysis.

He mentioned that there was an microscopy facility at the university – close to the engineering faculty, which was why he was aware of it. He recommended that I should apply for a position with them. I dismissed the idea, explaining that I was about to fly to Europe and, more critically, I lacked a US visa.

The following day I went out exploring, returning to the canteen that after dark. The engineering student approached me and told me that he had set up a meeting for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Given that he had made the arrangement, I attended the interview – but right away informed my interviewer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was probably wasting her time.

As is common in NYC – a city where anything feels possible – she responded: “We'll handle it. When can you start?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I held that position for 36 months. An advantage of the role was that I was granted free tuition at Columbia, and I seized the chance to complete a postgrad program in international relations.

We didn't cross paths after that and I don’t even know his identity, but his incredible act of kindness transformed my future in multiple respects. I lacked the bravery or nerve to contact anyone at an prestigious college and seek a position. And, I had long dreamed to pursue education overseas, but lacked the financial means without that tuition waiver.

Perhaps most importantly, that role at the university led me to a job in Zurich where I met my wonderful partner, with whom I now have a family of four kids. This was a pivotal life event. That kind stranger changed my trajectory in life, and I’m forever grateful.
